Their legs aren’t what they used to be and nor, sadly, is their memory. But now one nursing home thinks it has the hi-tech answer to help its elderly residents get around more easily – a satnav device for their Zimmer Frames.
Residents of the Betuweland nursing centre in the Dutch village Bemmel have been trying out the new navigation system for their frames for several months.
Turning point: Developers hope the Zimmer Frame device will help the elderly navigate their care homes without getting lost
It was developed by students of at a technical college in the Netherlands specifically for people with amnesia or orientation problems.
The inventors, from Arnhem-Nijmegen University, intended it to help elderly users avoid getting lost, especially in their own care homes.
As project leader Nowack Clark pointed out, however, the GPS systems used by normal satnavs in road vehicles will not work inside buildings because of transmission problems. “Therefore we make use of wireless internet,” he said.
Easy does it: The satnav device has been developed by a university team to give simple, plain directions
The device has been designed to be easy to use even for the most technophobic of Luddites.
The Zimmer Frame has a computer screen with just five buttons.
“Each button has a symbol, such as ‘toilet’ or ‘cup of coffee’,” the inventors explain.
“After pressing the button with a cup of coffee, arrows appear on the screen which point the way to the restaurant.”
